From Peter Murphy to OJ Simpson

You might not know who he is, but Matt Mahurin may have crept into your nightmares. A painter and photographer who specializes in disturbing imagery, he's created a number of wildly popular, sometimes controversial images. I first discovered his work reading the creepy Time Life series The Enchanted World. During the late 1980's he tried his hand at directing music videos (see below). And in 1994 he illustrated the infamous Time OJ Simpson cover. (Read about it here; His website contains some wonderful creepy stuff, so you should check it out as well.)

Freakin' in the Purple Haze

Over at the blog for the League of Tana Tea Drinkers -- which is like a Kiwanis club for folks who like severed heads -- they have a roundup of blog posts about drug-related horror movies. I contributed with my post about The Black Cat (part 2 coming soon!).

But Uranium Cafe comes in proud and strong from left field, arguing that The Nutty Professor is a "retelling of the Jeckyll and Hyde theme" in which...

...a quiet and soft spoken man of science finds a formula for breaking down his inhibitions giving him the power to do all the things his weaker but nobler other half can only dream about.

Actually it kind of makes sense. Way to let the freak flag fly, UC.

(Read it here for yourself).

The Shining Cuckoo Clock

I am kind of at a loss, here. I found a post about it at Slashfilm.com, and the designer is Chris Dimino, whose site is here. Dimino describes his creation:

Every hour Jack breaks through the door and the famous line "Here's Johnny" plays followed by the scream of Shelly Duvall.

Which, of course, begs the question: Just who needs/wants/can handle one of the scariest moments in modern film history played for them 24 times in a day?

People who've had lobotomies.

The criminally insane.

Maybe people who are old and tired and they think they've lost the capacity to feel, so any emotion at all -- even sheer terror -- would be a relief.

So for 99.999% of us, this thing is way too much Jack. But for the other .001%... it's just enough.
